Work is progressing on the first stage of the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination.  Contractors World Trail have completed a range of trails around the Mt Little Joe area (Stage 1A) and expect that riders will be thrilled with the result.

At this point it is anticipated that Stage 1A (30km of trails) will be open around mid-to-late July 2025, although the extended dry summer conditions are affecting the curing process of some of the newly completed trails.  Trails will continue to be monitored, and updates will be provided as we get closer to the anticipated opening.

This first stage will comprise of mainly easy trails, catering primarily for family groups and beginner riders. Stage 1A trails are a ride-in, ride-out design and not accessible by shuttle.

A positive step towards supporting the delivery of the full 125km of the Southern Network was the election commitment of an additional $3 million dollars from Federal Minister Andrew Giles. Council welcomes the commitment and looks forward to working in partnership to deliver this next phase of the project for our community.

A Project Emergency Management Plan was developed in partnership with the emergency services and approved by the Victorian Minister for Planning in 2023.

This Plan was tested in May with a comprehensive emergency training exercise facilitated by the SES, CFA, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police.  A thorough review of the exercise is underway, and any necessary adjustments will be completed before the trails open.

For Stage 1A Wesburn Park Trailhead will be the main access point. Council has increased parking capacity and sealed the entrance road at Wesburn Park as part of the project.

During the initial opening period Council will have contingency parking plans in place as well as traffic management to reduce the potential for parking issues.  Council will also monitor parking in and around Warburton and continue to investigate additional parking options in line with the Warburton Urban Design Framework.

The Warburton Rail Trail will connect to the network via a climbing trail just outside of Warburton township. A descending trail ends at Dolly Grey Reserve.

While it’s exciting to have the first 30kms of trails almost ready to ride, more experienced riders will be looking forward to the next stage when more challenging trails and features will open.

Opening sections of the trail at different stages aims to build visitation slowly, enabling an adaptive management approach to be used to solve any early teething problems.  The opening of Stage 1B in the first half of 2026 will include additional services, a new website, marketing and promotional activity.

Council is grateful to the many community advocates who have supported the project from the beginning, and we look forward to having Stage 1A open to the local community and other riders.
